Vertimeter
A practical and simple way to determine vertical
dimensions correctly.
The Vertimeter is a simple device to
establish the mandible's verticle rest and
centric position quickly and precisely. With
it's help, one can control the vertical distance
from outside the mouth.
 |
It consists of:
A. Base with graduated vertical scale
B. Chin Reference Line
C. Nose Reference Line - Measurement
Indicator
D. Thumb Position for rotation
|
Whether you are using the Ball Bearing
Bite Recorder (intra oral tracing device) or
conventional wax rims as your method of bite
recording, the Vertimeter is a superb control
device to determine the vertical distance
between the upper and lower jaw.
It is used during the bite registration
to measure the distance between reference points
marked on the patient's nose and chin. This
helps you to guide the patient into the proper
vertical dimension.

 |
Instructions For Use
- Place reference points on the tip
of the nose and the lower part of the
chin.
- To get the lower jaw at rest position,
have the patient count to ten, swallow
and hum the letter "Mmmmmm".
- In this position, with the lips gently
together, adjust the vertimeter's Chin
Reference Line and Nose Reference Line
to the marks on chin and nose.
- Note the distance. Repeat this phonetic
procedure several times until a consistent
measurementis achieved. You now have
the measurement of the mandible in rest
position.
- Now insert your recording devices
(ECB, wax rims, or Ball Bearing Bite
Recorder).
- To establish final centric use the
references of the Vertimeter and lower
it's distance 2-3 mm, then guide the
patient into this vertical-centric-relation.
